I marched in high school & college...I also was the percussion instructor at the local high school for four years. I love to talk marching...seeing I'm better at that than the kit.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I often wished I had somehow gotten into that. So many drummers come from the corps and go to the kit and just blaze around it. I would refuse to play trad grip though. I wish I had the hands like a corps man. Ouch
Up yours, Goodman.

I really need to be working my matched grip. Just about every time I pick up the sticks, left hand is trad. Funny thing is we played matched in high school...I didn't start doing traditional until college. The kids nowadays would never think of playing matched...because no corps do.

Why is that? Why is the corps stuck in trad grip?
Up yours, Goodman.

Tradition I guess. I've only seen a couple of top corps play matched.

And this too...

I would really like for everyone on this forum to develop an appreciation for marching percussion.

Same here! They asked me in high school to play but I turned it down to be dope head instead. The DCI Championships were on ESPN a couple of weeks ago.

if anyone has the chance to do this, DO IT... ive gained so much technique from it and it has helped me soo much...plus you get to drum during school. I missed out my freshmen year because i didn't want to be classified as a "band nerd" but i did it last year and this year and it has gained respect for me around school...

well thats my little speel

Yes...absolutely...if you have the oppurtunity to play in marching band do it...I played for the marching band back in high school...we did parades, football games, and of course the annual Newsday Marching band festival at Hofstra university...I kind of miss doing that, it was fun...the drumline was always the most impressive part of the performances

Yep...those were the funnest days of my life.

My college line - the JSU Marching Southerners is one of the top lines in the country. At the PASIC, they used to have a college drumline competition...they may still. Any way, we got 2nd in 1984 by 0.2. What a pisser! We did have the highest execution caption score (how well you play). So, to me, we won. Fuck the general effect caption...

We had a keg of beer on the bus...we got hammered on the 10 hr ride home. I'll bet they don't do shit like that now...the good times...

That year, we had guys from the Blue Devils & Spirit of Atlanta (now just Spirit - based out of JSU).

I'm glad you guys appreciate the talent, and hard work it takes to get to that level of drumming. And then, to have to march drill while playing those insanely difficult charts.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
